Summer Reading Month Proclamation

WHEREAS, reading is a fundamental skill that provides opportunities for exploration, imagination, and enjoyment, and studies show that reading over the summer months helps children and teens maintain the literacy skills and prepares them to return to school ready to learn, and;

WHEREAS, the mission of the Palm Beach County Library System is to connect communities, inspire thought, and enrich lives, and its vision is to open minds to a world of unlimited possibilities, and through its 17 locations and bookmobile annually offer a Summer Reading Program with a variety of activities for residents of all ages, and;

WHEREAS, over 276,000 children and teens reside in Palm Beach County, and the Palm Beach County Library System provides free access to over 700,000 children and teen books in print and electronic format, and;

WHEREAS, the theme for the 2019 Summer Reading Program is, “A Universe of Stories,” which encourages participants to explore new worlds of learning, in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, which also coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the Palm Beach County Library System, and;

WHEREAS, the Palm Beach County Library System in partnership with the School District of Palm Beach County will provide free summer meal services for children and teens at all our locations weekdays through June and July;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF PALM BEACH COUNTY, FLORIDA, assembled in regular session this 4th day of June, 2019, that June in Palm Beach County is hereby declared: Summer Reading Month.

BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED BY THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF PALM BEACH COUNTY, FLORIDA, that this proclamation is duly sealed and executed by the members of this Board. The foregoing Proclamation was sponsored by Commissioner Mary Lou Berger, and upon unanimous consent of the Board, declared the Proclamation duly enacted.
